Medical coding is the process of coding or classifying medical procedures into a standard format. Like a library Dewey decimal system, similar hierarchical system exist for all medical procedures. The data entered is used for a number of purposes but there are two main uses. The first is as a basis for medical claims and billing. This may be either to the patient directly or to their medical insurance provider. Medical billing is a particular role that may be done by someone specializing in this area or as part of a more general medical coding role.
The second use of this data is to provide analytical data. Data is used by databases examining cancer trends or incidences of a particular thing they are looking at.
A medical coding specialist, unless they have been trained on the job and have years of experience, will tend to have a formal qualification. Qualifications range from basic certification through to degree qualification. Most medical practices hiring new medical coders will want to see some form of qualification.
A specialist course, regardless of what level it is aimed at, is likely to cover subjects such as medical terms, data analysis techniques, computer programs, clinical coding, as well as a more specific medical education. In many instances there will also be a practical experience requirement before a person can become fully certified.
Once the educational aspects have been met most medical coding specialists will have a continuing education requirement. This is to ensure they stay up to date with advances and research in their field. In the future a specialist who wants to continue their career in the medical field may choose to move on to a practice manager role or a medical coding manager role.
According to a report by the US bureau of statistics medical coding is a field growing faster than other employment areas. Based on this the employment outlook for a medical coding specialist is very positive.
