Medical Coder

If you don’t want to be a doctor or nurse but have an interest in the medical field, being a medical coder may be the ideal job for you.

So what is a medical coder? The jobs requirements include turning the details of each medical procedure into a standardized format. Each procedure, diagnosis and patient encounter is classified into a software program against standard alpha numeric codes. From this information patients can be billed or claims can be made against insurance companies.

What Is Expected Of A Good Medical Coder?

To be a good coder you need to be analytical and have good attention to detail. It is also beneficial to learn what to expect from a particular procedure and will query if details appear to be missing. If items are not detailed they will not be part of the total cost of the procedure being billed and the medical organization will lose money.

For example, if a heart operation is done and no stents are recorded as part of the procedure the coder would query this. Stents are a key piece of apparatus used in heart operations and are very expensive. If the patient is no charged for these, there is major money to be lost.

On the other side of the coin, using standard codes allows insurance companies to analyze what they are being charged for and can prevent fraudulent claims.  In a simple bypass operation they may expect to be charged for 2 stents and would query if they were charged for ten. So the coder needs to have an analytical mind to ensure all the information they process is correct and accurate. They also need to be comfortable following up with the medical provider if they have questions.

There are a number of accredited courses available that enable a medical coder to gain recognizable qualifications in their field.  Possessing a certification in this field may be the difference between getting a job and not getting one. There are a number of course options but most are offered as classroom courses or online training.

Doing a course will help familiarize you with various medical concepts and ideas.  Many courses have a pre-requisite that students will have done an anatomy course prior to undertaking a course, but this is not a pre-requisite for all courses.

The health sector continues to grow and people continue to need to visit their medical practitioners. Computer systems have made the data inputting part of a coder’s job much easier and less prone to human error. Being comfortable with these programs is therefore a key component of the job.

A coder can be involved in the health care field without the stress of direct patient contact.  The medical coder is a crucial role in the smooth running of any hospital or medical practice.
