Whether you choose a class room or an online approach to learning many of the same areas will need to be covered in the course outline.  As well as becoming familiar with computer software and the coding system there should be coverage of areas such as ethics, business practices, communication etc.  Medical topics should also be well covered.  While you are not going to become a nurse or doctor, you need to have a basic understanding of many medical concepts and procedures. Many of these will really be learned in the workplace, but understanding the theory surrounding them is invaluable. As well as familiarity with medical procedures ancillary services such as radiography and pharmacology are likely to be referred.

Like any qualification a medical coding certification is a step on the ladder to a career.

There is a lot of positivity around the prospects for medical coding careers.  Positive signals have been made by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the USA. They have stated that due to continued medical growth medical coding jobs are expected to grow faster than other employment sectors.

A medical coder has the role of bringing medical information together in a standard form.  The standard form is a coding regime that assigns a set code to a particular procedure.
