Medical Coding Certification

November 21st, 2010

As the role of medical coder has become more important so too has the need for having medical coding certification. A recognized medical coding certificate means the holder can be considered to be competent in the theory and practices related to medical coding.

Most medical coders work in medical practices, hospitals or insurance companies. Many of these employers are less keen on employing a coder without certification. This is because of the time and effort required to teach these skills on the job. It is far better to employ a coder who has already done a medical coding courses and is further along the track in their practical understanding.

Medical Coding Certification and The Steps Needed To Obtain It

The process of obtaining a medical coding certificate is like any other certification, a training course needs to be undertaken.  The certification may take the form of a diploma, certificate or a degree.  Which suits will depend on the student and what they want to do with their qualification. A medical coding certification course may be classroom based or it may be of the online variety. Which is most suitable will again depend on the students needs.

There is some advantage to an online course as it is possible to do this at convenient times and to work along at your own pace.  Many online courses provide high quality information that is supported by being able to access tutors when problems and questions arise throughout the course of the program.  Online courses may be convenient, but make sure they are comprehensive enough.  If the time frame is too short, employers are likely to think the course may not have covered as much as a slightly longer one.

For other the classroom based courses have definite advantages. This is a structured approach that forces you to keep moving along. Peer pressure is a wonderful motivator.  One advantage that classroom based program have is that they can also include a portion of hands on training. Not all class room based medical coding courses do this, but if it is offered it is a huge advantage. There is little that can compare to the learning gained from actually spending time on placement.

medical coding certificationWhether you choose a class room or an online approach to learning many of the same areas will need to be covered in the course outline.  As well as becoming familiar with computer software and the coding system there should be coverage of areas such as ethics, business practices, communication etc.  Medical topics should also be well covered.  While you are not going to become a nurse or doctor, you need to have a basic understanding of many medical concepts and procedures. Many of these will really be learned in the workplace, but understanding the theory surrounding them is invaluable. As well as familiarity with medical procedures ancillary services such as radiography and pharmacology are likely to be referred.

Like any qualification a medical coding certification is a step on the ladder to a career.

This means lab results, doctors notes and all other medical sources are collated in a standard manner.  This means information is able to be analyzed and reported.  Medical coders are dedicated to collating and preparing this information.

Those working in this field are referred to as back office positions and are devoted to making sure the information is available to those that need it. The sort of uses of codified data are patient billing, insurance company reimbursement, and medical trend analysis.
